Carica 2012 Syrah,
Bennett Valley, Sonoma County
Balanced and complex, the newest release from Carica Wines is an elegant Syrah with vivid flavors of black cherry and currant. After a moment to open in the glass, the wine brings aromatics of subtle plum and graphite. With well-integrated tannins, the wine ends with roasty, mocha notes.
Critical acclaim for Carica 2012 Syrah includes a 90 point score from Wine Spectator. “Tightly structured and appealingly gamy, with a core of lively acidity and tannins buoyed by complex flavors of smoky plum, olive and pepper.”
All the winegrapes for the 2012 Carica Syrah were sustainably grown in Sonoma’s cool Bennett Valley at Jemrose Vineyard, which is renowned for producing highly sought-after Rhone varietals. Three types of Syrah grapes were hand-harvested after mid-October, then separately crushed and fermented in open-topped vessels. The wine was aged for 19 months in neutral French and American oak barrels. The wine was bottled unfiltered and unfined on July 25, 2014, and aged in-bottle for over a year before release. 298 cases produced.
Asked for food pairing recommendations for the 2012 Syrah, Carica Wines winemaker Charlie Dollbaum commented, “Your favorite, unfussy grilled fare, something like meaty Portobello mushrooms or steak, would be a great choice. And you can’t go wrong with lamb. I’m thinking of lamb sugo with rosemary pasta.”
Available at select California retailers and directly from the winery. $39.00/bottle
